Finish Options for Pool Decks

Slip resistance is the starting point for every pool deck finish decision. Everything else — appearance, colour, texture — follows from that.

Broom Finish is the most practical choice. The texture provides excellent grip when wet, it is cost-effective, and it holds up well under the traffic and moisture cycles a pool deck sees year after year. For homeowners who want a clean, durable result without unnecessary complexity, this is the finish we most often recommend.

Exposed Aggregate offers excellent grip and has one meaningful advantage specific to London, ON summers: it stays noticeably cooler underfoot than smooth concrete. The surface texture and the aggregate material itself reflect more heat, which matters on a July afternoon when the deck is in full sun. It also weathers well and suits a range of landscaping styles.

Stamped Concrete can work well on pool decks when sealed correctly. The requirement is a non-slip additive in the sealer or a matte finish product — high-gloss sealers are not appropriate near water. Done properly, it delivers a decorative result without compromising safety. We only apply stamped finishes to pool decks with the correct sealer for wet environments.

Coloured Concrete works well when the right tones are chosen. Lighter colours are strongly recommended over darker ones — see the section below.

A Note on Colour and Heat

This is practical advice worth knowing before committing to a colour. Dark concrete — charcoal, deep grey, slate tones — absorbs heat and radiates it back. On a London, Ontario summer afternoon, a dark pool deck in full sun can reach temperatures that are genuinely uncomfortable barefoot, and that heat retention lasts well into the evening.

Lighter colours and exposed aggregate surfaces stay meaningfully cooler under the same conditions. If the deck will be in full or partial sun for most of the day, lighter tones are the more functional choice. They also cost exactly the same.
